How to Get Back into Shape After C-section?

If you have recently had a C-section, the first thing to know is this: you have just undergone major abdominal surgery. You brought a new life into the world at the same time. What your body has done is extraordinary, and it deserves to be treated that way. When thoughts about getting back into shape begin to surface, and they will, at your own pace. The most important thing is to approach recovery gently, with guidance, and without comparison. Every woman's postpartum journey is different. There is no timeline you are falling behind on.

The First Steps: What to Prioritise Before Anything Else

#1 Breath Work & Pelvic Floor Awareness

Deep diaphragmatic breathing is the foundation of postnatal core recovery. It helps reconnect your breath to your deep abdominal muscles and gently activates the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles carry a significant load during pregnancy, regardless of the type of delivery. Start here, even in the first few days.

#2 Walking, Your Best Early Exercises

At Physiobliss, a women's health & fitness centre in Vadodara, we emphasise that short, gentle walks are one of the safest and most effective early postnatal exercises after a C-section. They improve circulation, support mood, reduce the risk of blood clots, and gradually rebuild stamina. Begin with 5 minutes and increase slowly. There is no need to push pace or distance.

#3 Gentle Core Reconnection

Once you have medical clearance, include gentle core activation exercises. This includes pelvic tilts, heel slides and transverse abdominal breathing. Avoid crunches, sit-ups, and full planks until your physiotherapist in Vadodara confirms your core is ready.

What to Avoid in Early Recovery

  • High impact exercises like running, jumping and HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), until cleared by your doctor and physiotherapist.
  • Heavy lifting for 6 to-12 weeks.
  • Abdominal exercises that cause visible doming or bulging in the midline.
  • Comparing your recovery to others. Every caesarean is different, and so is everybody.

How Physiobliss Support Your Postnatal Recovery

At Physiobliss, we understand that postnatal recovery is especially challenging after a C-section. Our team, led by Dr Richa Goswami (MPT Ortho, Women's Health Counsellor, YTTC), offers a genuinely integrated approach: physiotherapy, personalised fitness programmes, yoga, Pilates, and expert nutrition guidance, all under one roof.
We begin with a full assessment, including your current fitness level, hormonal health, and recovery stage. Based on this information, build a programme that works with your body, not against it. Whether your goal is restoring core strength, managing post-pregnancy weight, or simply feeling well again, we are here to support every step.
